Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Potato masher or fork

Ingredients

Beans Base

  • 2 16-oz cans red beans undrained
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt adjust to taste
  • 1/8 tsp hot sauce like Tabasco
  • 1/4 tsp liquid smoke
  • 3 tbsp bacon fat or butter if preferred

Rice

  • 2 cups cooked white rice drained

Instructions

  • Empty the canned red beans into a medium saucepan. Add the 1/4 cup of water and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  • Using a fork or potato masher, mash about half of the beans. This creates a creamy texture while leaving some beans whole for balance.
  • Stir in the onion powder, garlic powder, salt, hot sauce, liquid smoke, and bacon fat. Mix until well combined.
  • Lower the heat and let the beans cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Scoop the red beans into bowls and top with a generous serving of cooked white rice.
  • Optional: Garnish with green onions, smoked paprika, or a drizzle of hot sauce for extra flavor.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, replace bacon fat with butter or olive oil. Add smoked paprika or cayenne for extra flavor.
